Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

When push comes to shove and the leaders have their backs against the wall, many strange ideas and allegiances tend to formulate. Self interest is the common denominator for all as they adjust policies and actions in order to best serve their own needs and ambitions.

Attitudes towards the Palestinian – Israeli conflict have always been determined according to the machinations of the prevalent political climate in the respective countries that have a stake in the Middle East.

Accordingly, the White House, eager to boost Bush’s record in the Middle East, has demanded that Israel’s unilateral disengagement plan be frozen until after the elections are over. Sadly, this charge is not for the sake of upholding justice or maintaining an evenhanded policy, nor is it intended to safeguard the US sponsored “roadmap” for peace, rather the purpose is not to upset the apple cart in a way that would hurt Bush’s already low standing when it comes to the many problems created or ignored in the Middle East.

Both the US and Europe have strongly opposed Israel’s illegal wall, being constructed on privately owned Palestinian land that has been forcefully seized by the Israeli military. Both the US and Europe have refused to recognize the ICJ’s legitimacy in hearing the case against Israel’s controversial barrier.

Clearly, such a decision by these nations stems from fears that they might be held accountable for their own transgressions. Further, perhaps their decision reflects an unwillingness to actively pressure Israel, as in the US this would amount to political suicide, while Europe is reluctant to further augment its growing schism with US foreign policy.

As for Egypt and Jordan, they have both opposed Israel’s occupation, unilateral steps and the construction of the wall. Nevertheless, they are indirectly legitimizing these measures by surrendering to realpolitik motivations.

Egypt has gone as far as to be willing to adjust the text of the Camp David treaty, signed in 1979 and opposed by Sharon, to enable Israeli troops to assist in controlling their borders with Gaza after Israel’s “promised withdrawal.”

Meanwhile, Jordan’s King Abdallah has held a clandestine meeting with Sharon, at the latter’s farm in Israel, in order to assure Israel’s help in keeping Palestinians out of Jordan once the wall is fully erected and true hardship takes over Palestinian lives.

Does one blame the game? In the era of human globalization and a mounting emphasis on human rights, one would expect a stronger stance with justice. It is the people, empowered by a healthy democratic system, that have the power to influence desired change, such as in Spain, where the previous government was expelled by the electorate for going to war in Iraq without the support of the masses. In sharp contrast, Arab countries, lacking democratic systems, are most easily influenced and manipulated for their leaders are the sole decision makers and have no internal fears of being overthrown or losing positions through elections.

The USA is a special case. While the people are empowered by a democratic system, they are ignorant when it comes to foreign politics, and unfortunately, the sleeping dog has not yet been awakened. US politicians continue to pursue their self interest on many different national and international levels, since very few Americans are aware and willing to hold their lawmakers accountable.

A democracy is empowered and functions at its best when awareness is high and the mistakes taken by politicians are felt and dealt with on the ground. While a country’s self interest should necessarily be a factor in its policies, a healthy democracy should go beyond by balancing the interests of our common humanity and striving for ideals evinced in such notions as human rights and justice.
