Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

The joyful sound of Christmas bells will not echo in the streets of Bethlehem. Jerusalem will forever mark this year’s Eid Al-Fitr as a cold and painful reminder of death.

The last Friday prayers of Ramadan, a religious gathering that usually exceeds 400,000 Muslim worshippers at Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, was only attended by 50,000 this year, due to Israeli restrictions on Palestinians to enter the old city of Jerusalem. Christmas Eve in Manger Square will not be met with the annual choir celebrations from all over the world; instead, it will literarily be a Silent Night.

The promise of a peaceful future is almost shattered. The Middle East peace process (or what is left of it) is undergoing a final and crucial attempt for revival. Yet the imperatives of peace remain unchanged; the Palestinian people want their legitimate rights. They want their return home, their freedom, their dignity, and most importantly, their security.

Three months have almost past since the start of the current Intifada (uprising). More than 310 Palestinians have been shot dead by Israeli soldiers (33% of whom are children), and almost 11,000 have been injured, some with critical disabilities. Strikingly, the number of Palestinians killed in less than three months has already exceeded that of the first twelve months of the 1987 Intifada.

As the world celebrates the first year of the millennium with optimism and hope for a better future, Palestine will share the pain of its injured and the silence of its martyrs.
