Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

Israel is exercising a policy of arm-twisting and strangulation with the Palestinians; non-compliance with Barak means starvation, poverty, and death.

As the Israeli siege policy of multiple closures imposed on the West Bank and the Gaza Strip continue unabated, the Palestinian economy is left in a state of drastic deterioration. Israel’s aggression has not only claimed the lives of more than 210 Palestinians, it has also placed the life of an entire nation under siege.

The closures have left 120,000 Palestinian workers in Israel unemployed, 150,000 workers have joined the ranks of the unemployed within Palestinian-controlled areas, trade has almost come to a halt, and an annual gross national income of $ 6.1 billion has been severely hit with a shortfall of $ 210 million. Even if the Israeli army carries out its withdrawal from Palestinian areas soon, the detrimental effects of the current closures are likely to leave long-term implications on the Palestinian economy with an almost irreversible increase in poverty rates.

More directly, Barak has stated that millions of dollars in tax collected by Israel for payment back to the Palestinian Authority would not be handed over.

Economic war, accompanied by harsh and overwhelming military operations against Palestinian targets, is Barak’s way of dealing with the situation. Having violated the most basic Palestinian rights, having dismissed the essence of the peace process, and having failed to address the causes of the current conflict (Israel’s occupation), Barak is now turning to a policy of strangulation that will certainly leave dangerous and irreversible wounds on the Palestinian people, thus dooming the region to further conflict and suffering.
