Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

The daily horrors of Israel’s use of heavy weaponry against Palestinian civilian targets, and the clear prevalence of militarism in Barak’s policy have irrecoverably destroyed the letter and spirit of the peace process. As the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people continues unabated, with more than 200 Palestinians killed and approximately 7800 injured (some of which critically and irrecoverably), Israel’s, already shaken, commitment to peace is in question.

Is the strategic option for peace (mistakenly) no longer viable to the Israeli state? Will Israel dismiss the possibility of integration for a better deal (in its own perspective), exclusion firmly based on power, economic and (US-sponsored) military superiority?

Of course, all this would be backed up by an articulate propaganda of international public relations. Yet, such analogy will certainly underline a fatal misjudgment for Israel; it cannot maintain exclusion, thus, cannot afford not reaching peace with its neighbors.

For the Palestinians, the scenario is strikingly less complicated. In order for Israel to gain legitimate standing in the Middle East (a gift only possible with the consent of the Palestinians) it has to withdraw to the June 1967 boundaries and acknowledge the Palestinian refugees right of return. This is the formula for Israel’s peaceful coexistence in this “tough neighborhood.”

The Intifada (Uprising) era has proven to be a re-emerging pattern in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. The Palestinian people’s quest for justice, freedom, and independence is seemingly a continuous and self-momentous process that would only end with a just and comprehensive settlement, a settlement whereby the peace process is compatible with the peace imperative. We do not need a new framework for peace. There is no new framework for peace.

What we need is a new Israeli approach to peace. A regional national dynamic of protest against Israel and an internally volatile situation should awaken Israel to realize that the only way to peace is a Palestinian state based on UN Resolutions 242, 194, and 338; a state not fragmented by Israeli settlements, but rather, firmly based on demographic and territorial contiguity.

A compromise-based peace process is inevitable. The Palestinians, on their part, have taken their fair share of that compromise by accepting 22% of Historical Palestine. Israel must realize that it is time to face the realities of peace and abide by its legal, political, and historical obligations; end the occupation.

These are the imperatives of peace; “a golden opportunity for Israel” is how some may describe it.
