Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

The Arafat-Perez meeting in Gaza city two nights ago was yet another superficial and unsubstantial treatment of a real crisis, a no-good assessment of the current volatility sweeping across the Occupied Territories.

A disappointing and vague “understanding” that both parties have agreed to put an end to violence, and fully implement the (even more disappointing) Sharm Al-Sheikh summit agreement, was never actually announced. Israel was revisited by an old, dreadfully feared, face of Palestinian struggle for freedom, a suicide attack in the heart of west Jerusalem.

What next?

Mounting Palestinian dismay in the peace process, a Machiavellian Israeli policy of brutality, lack of genuine Arab support to the national aspirations of the Palestinians, and (more evident than ever) a sense of disbelief by both Israelis and Palestinians that real peace could be reached. These are the realities in which we find ourselves today.

Perhaps “peace” was never really an aspiration for Israel. Even more dangerous, perhaps the “peace process” was a means-to-an-end for Israel. Enriching its already overwhelmed global support through the publicity of seeking peace may be a strategic and fruitful consideration for Israel. This is shortsightedness, political mismanagement, and more than anything, an attempt by Israel to rise above the law and disregard the political and legal rights of the Palestinian people.

Repeatedly, the Palestinians have stressed that real peace can only be achieved through Israel’s implementation of UN Resolutions 242, 194, and 338. A compromise-based peace process is inevitable. The Palestinians, on their part, have taken their fair share of that compromise by accepting 22% of Historical Palestine. Israel must realize that it is time to face the realities of history and abide by its legal, political, and historical obligations; end the occupation.

The Israeli occupation is the cause of the conflict, thus, its end (only) will bring peace closer to reality.
