Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

Barak’s language of threats and ultimatum is a dangerous strategic mistake. Not only does it twist the reality of the current situation, but also fills it with a volatile ingredient to escalate into war.

Israel is once again blaming the victim and putting extreme pressure on the Palestinian people to self-negate their legitimate right to self-determination and submit to a brutal and unjust Israeli policy. This approach by Barak, which only serves to reveal Israel’s mentality of militarism, is unacceptable to the Palestinians, the Arab World, and the international community at large.

As we face the dramatic developments caused by Sharon’s provocative incursion into Al-Aqsa Mosque, and the possibility of spillover effect of the current conflict, there is an urgent and immediate need to take pragmatic and rational action in containing the violence. Who holds the key to putting an end to all of this?

It must be clearly understood by Israel that the current violence can only end with direct orders to its disciplined military forces to withdraw from Palestinian territories, and stop their attacks on civilian Palestinian targets. The logic behind Barak’s ultimatum collapses as we begin to consider the causes of the current crisis, i.e. Sharon’s provocation accompanied with Barak’s excessive use of force against Palestinian protesters.

The real ultimatum should be directed at Jewish settlers, whose gang-like attacks against Palestinian civilians have already claimed 2 lives and left tens critically injured. This is a dangerous situation of civil disorder, on the Israeli part, and must be dealt with immediately by the Israeli authorities, whose efforts have so far done the exact opposite by indirectly facilitating such attacks. The settlers’ have been indirectly encouraged by Barak’s macho tone of threat.

In the context of the current situation, peace is in the hands of Barak and his army.
