Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

In a blatant and non-compromising manner, Israel continues its unlawful violations of Palestinian rights in Jerusalem. As the deadline of September 2000 for reaching a “final peace agreement” looms across the horizon, there is evidently a clear sense of disbelief in Israel’s genuine will to put an end to the conflict.

Israel is continuously pursuing its “logic of power” policy towards the Palestinians, whereby it unilaterally dictates the prospects for any possible deal on Jerusalem within the context of a final peace agreement.

The continuation of illegal settlement expansion, the demolition of Palestinian homes, the confiscation of Palestinian land, and the discriminatory Israeli policy of depriving Palestinians their residency rights in the city are inevitably constituting a major threat to the achievement of a just and lasting peace in the area.

The ostensible mentality of the “occupier” remains predominant in Israel’s expected role as a “partner” for peace. Israeli pressures on foreign dignitaries not to meet Palestinian officials in East Jerusalem seems to underline Israel’s arrogant behavior and undermine the legitimate right of the Palestinians to the city.

Jerusalem is occupied territory, and its status is to be determined in the final status negotiations.

Israel’s unjustifiable insistence of maintaining its unilaterally-declared sovereignty over Jerusalem stands in violation of internationally binding agreements, most notably under United Nations Security Council Resolutions 242 and 181, which clearly state that Israel must withdraw to the boundaries of June 1967.

Justice, legality, and political correctness for the Palestinians must be recognized in any possible arrangement for the final status of Jerusalem. Any deal on Jerusalem that fails to take such elements into consideration is bound to induce further elements of conflict, and inevitably bring about the collapse of the peace process altogether.
