Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

Despite the American President’s knowledge that Sharon was not “a man of peace” – a phrase that enraged the Arab world then- he still clung to Sharon’s plan and embraced his perspective, eventually enforcing the Israeli vision on the future of Palestinians.

Such measures only widen the gap, which Bush is refusing to identify, between his country and the Arab world, a gap that cannot be eliminated with political agreements and economic cooperation, a gap not only between governments, but between widely different nations and cultures.

The degree of ignorance the U.S. government is sinking into makes it bad timing for their calls for “reforms” in the Middle East, especially after the muted response of the Americans following Israel’s incursion into Rafah, and the flooding of pictures from Abu Ghraib.

This proposal was part of an invitation by the American President for leaders of Arab countries to discuss issues of internal development within the summit of the world's major industrial nations or G-8 that took place on Sea Island, Georgia, Tuesday, as a part of his efforts to promote democracy, human rights and economic liberalization in the region.

The invitation aroused condemnation among Arabs, and accusations that America is trying to impose its own views on the world, while turning its back to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. This refusal lead two of America’s closest allies and friends, Saudi Arabia and Egypt, to take a step back and refuse to attend this summit, saying that change should come from “within.”

This refusal did not only come from Arab countries, American Sen. Lincoln Chafee, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee on the region, said that this matter is not for the U.S. to control or decide upon.

"Not only does it not get off the ground, but it further alienates them (Mideast leaders) by just turning a deaf ear and a blind eye to the Israeli-Palestinian issue," said Chafee.

When Bush started forming his “anti-terrorism” campaign, he told his people and the world that this war is going to establish democracy and freedom, and here he goes again with his reforms to ‘enforce’ democracy in the Middle East.

What Bush keeps ignoring is the real meaning of freedom and democracy, and the fact that they cannot be enforced, neither by war or so–called coalitions and calls of reform. No matter how hard he tries, the war-torn nations of the world will always refuse him, along with his policies.

America waged wars on twenty countries since World War II, a number that erases the notions of peace and freedom the U.S. tries to promote, and leaves images of destruction, displacement and abuse in its place.

Before the U.S. President calls for reforming the Arab countries, he should consider reforming his own government that does not recognize the existence of other countries apart from its own, and maybe take a closer look at the real meaning of freedom and democracy for a change.

"I said you were a man of peace. I want you to know I took immense crap for that."
- President George Bush to PM Ariel Sharon as quoted in Glenn Kessler, Friendship, His Way, Washington Post (June 8, 2004)
