A meeting held yesterday in East Jerusalem between British Foreign-secretary, Robin Cook, and Palestinian officials has ended with clashes among Palestinian and Israeli security staff. An Israeli security official, who was accompanying Cook in his East Jerusalem visit, was not allowed by Palestinian security to attend a meeting that the Foreign-secretary was conducting with Mr. Faisal Husseini, Palestinian Minister of Jerusalem Affairs. As the arguments mounted between both parties, the Israeli authorities attacked and arrested two of the Palestinian security men. These provocative actions by Israeli security forces are clear evidence of Israel’s disregard for Palestinian rights in Jerusalem. Furthermore, they are indirect indications of Israel’s “illegitimate” presence in East Jerusalem; the need to carry out such unnecessary provocations can only be explained by Israel’s feeling of having to “impose” their authority over Palestinian officials in Jerusalem, rather than being “rightfully” allowed to do so.
