Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

The long-awaited safe passage linking the West Bank and the Gaza Strip has been officially opened this morning. The implications of this physical linkage between the two territories comprising the main population concentration of Palestinians are significant. For more than 30 years (since the Israeli occupation of 1967), the two areas have been socially, physically, and economically isolated. The passage marks a kind of re-unification for the Palestinians.

More 1500 permits, in the form of magnetic cards, have been granted to Palestinian citizens wishing to travel from the West Bank to the Gaza Strip, and vise versa. Nevertheless, the new arrangement is not free of Israeli restrictions. The Israeli authorities reserve the right to reject applications, basing their decisions on “security” reasons.

Even when permits are issued, the procedures are all but smooth. Travelers have to go through extreme and strenuous security measures, such as restrictions on the time allowed to drive through the passage; this time cannot exceed one and a half hours.

As the safe passage begins operating, an increasing number of Palestinians are expected to be traveling between the territories; however, in light of the restrictions imposed by the Israelis on the easy flow of travelers, the, supposedly “safe”, passage is equally expected to be “uneasy.”
