Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

On November 8th 2001, the Israeli Knesset (parliament) voted in favor of lifting the immunity of Dr. Azmi Bishara, an Arab member of the Knesset, so he can stand trial for what has been labeled as "supporting a terrorist organization and arranging illegal visits by Israeli citizens to Syria."

This campaign to put Bishara on trial was initiated by the Shas party (a previously illegal right-wing Israeli faction) led by Rabbi Ovadia Yosef. The Rabbi is well known for his extremism, preaching death to the Arabs and encouraging settlers to terrorize Palestinian civilians.

Knesset member Bishara had visited Syria this summer. During his visit, he allegedly praised acts of violence by freedom fighters (resistance groups), which Israel notes as "terrorist organizations." Bishara also helped 19 groups of Israeli Arabs to visit their families in Syria, which Israel considers an enemy state. Member of Kesset's (MK's) immunity had been lifted over 30 times since the creation of Israel, for reasons such as: bribe taking, foreign currency offenses or traffic offenses. Never before have MK's lost their immunity for remarks they had made.

"I shall stand trial to prove my innocence" Bishara commented. "Are these the great democrats that want to put me beyond the law? Is this the democracy you want in the Knesset?" Bishara said referring to the Shas Jewish extremist party. Shas is well known as the opposition of democracy in Israel. This is due to their belief in Israel as a purely 'Jewish' state.

Never before in a "true democracy" has someone been stripped of his/her immunity as a result of a statement he/she had made. "I am happy that the Lebanese people have rid themselves of Israeli occupation. What is wrong with that?" Bishara added. "There is no democracy here, don't kid yourselves."

Israel's claim to being the only democracy in the region is as fake as a two-dollar bill! The strength of any system and especially a democratic one is measured by its ability to withstand criticism. In the United States, if a politician makes an unpopular statement, then 'the people' vote him/her out of office. Investigating unpopular statements by 'the police' is how a police state works. Acting in the way the Israeli Knesset has done strikes at the fundamental democratic principals.

Arabic citizens of Israel have suffered from Israel's so called democracy for 53 years. Even though 1948 Palestinians (Palestinians with Israeli citizenship) make up 20% of the population of Israel, their representation is limited. This is done through direct and indirect discrimination. Israeli law prohibits Palestinian citizens from mounting a political challenge to the state's Zionist identity. They also discriminate by creating very influential Jewish organizations that have authority over certain governmental functions and serve as a protection to the distinctive government of Jewish 'exclusivity.'

Dr. Azmi Bishara was the first Arab to run for prime minister position in the state of Israel. He is now a victim of Israel's "Jewish democracy" which he had fought so hard to try and turn into a "true democracy" or as close to that as possible. A "Jewish and Democratic" state can never exist and is in itself a contradiction of terms.
