Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

Tourism Minister Rehavam Ze'evi was rushed to Hadassa Hospital after being shot twice in the head at the Hyatt Hotel in Jerusalem. According to Professor Avi Rifkin, Ze'evi arrived to the hospital "…with no pulse and no respiration." Attempts to resuscitate him through opening his chest and a direct heart massage failed. Ze'evi was pronounced dead at 10:00 a.m Wednesday October 17th, 2001.

Rehavam Ze'evi was known to be a radical right wing Israeli politician. He was highly provocative to the Palestinians, not least for his venomous terminology and discourse in describing Arabs, Muslims, and Palestinians: "We should get rid of the Palestinians the same way you get rid of lice. We have to stop this cancer from spreading within us." He was opposed to the Middle East peace process, in particular the current initiatives aimed at reviving Palestinian-Israeli political dialogue and an end to the current hostilities. Ze'evi, had anounced his withdrawal from the government which was schedualed to officially take place on Wednesday October 17th, 2001.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) claimed responsibility for the incident.

Repeatedly, the Palestinians have cautioned against Israel's policy of political assassinations and extra-judicial killings against Palestinian political figures and personalities. Unfortunately, these calls have only been met by international silence, which ultimately led to Palstinian retaliation, such as the killing of Ze'vi. Sixty-seven Palestinian political figures have been assassinated by Israeli 'death squads' since the start of the Intifada in September 2000. These "operations" have often led to the killing of bystanders, including women and children.

The killing of Ze'evi comes in retaliation to the assassinations of one of the PLO's most prominent figures, and leader of the PFLP, the late Abu Ali Mustafa, on August 27th, 2001.

Ze'evi, who was known as "the father of transfer," has been notorious for his calls for the deportation of all Arabs as the only solution. He stated that "The Israelis have realized that it is impossible to live in a country with two nationalities. The solution for that is their separation, or deportation." Ze'evi, an America citizen and a former graduate of the Command and General Staff College of the US army, is regarded as the most right-wing member of the current Israeli government. He often conveyed his hostile views towards the Palestinians shamelessly and assertively, including his belief that there is no room for the (stateless) Palestinians to live on this land, while, ironically, advocating the immigration of Jews of other nationalities to reside in the 'occupied territories.'

Ze'evi has been criticized by most for his provocative and racist statements. Even the Israeli Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has issued a press release in which they criticized the words Mr. Ze'evi. The ADL stated "referring to a group of people in such a derogatory and disparaging way is bigoted and does nothing to address the matter in a serious way. In fact, such expressions of abhorrence and disdain are harmful to Israel's interests and most unbecoming of an Israeli Minister." (www.adl.org)

Ariel Sharon's cabinet held a meeting to respond to the attack. The Israeli government's actions so far have included the enforcement of severe closures on Palestinian areas, which is a blatant violation of the recent 'agreement' reached by Palestinian and Israeli officials to ease the one-year old siege on the Palestinian people.

While the Palestinian leadership was quick to condemn the assassination of Ze'evi, and to hold those responsible accountable, there is significant Palestinian fear of massive Israeli attacks against Palestinian areas. This is in light of Israel's previous, and familiar, policy of 'collective punishment' and brute military force.

Finally, it must be cautioned that the root causes of today's incident must be put in full perspective, namely that the Israeli government's adoption of political assassination as 'state policy' is a provocative and illegal measure, which poses a grave violation of international law as well as the total disregard of the norms of human decency and civilized political life.

We call on the international community to take immediate and concrete steps to stop the already volatile situation from deteriorating any further.
