Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

Kofi Annan admitted that when he was awakened by a phone call in the early hours of Friday, October 12th, 2001, he thought "something disastrous" had happened. To his, and 52,100 other UN employees', delight, it was to be a phone call informing the secretary-general that the 100th Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the UN and himself.

Yet, as the 55 year-old institution celebrates this honorable prize, the role of the UN and it's standing in today's international society must be put in perspective.

First, and foremost, there is a need for the UN to reexamine its role as a key player in international peace and security. Since its establishment in 1946, the UN has witnessed significant economic and political restraints.

The Big Five have used their veto power on bills and resolutions. The Soviet Union started this trend during the early years of the Cold War. Such obstacles hurt the organization, economically, politically, let alone undermine its credibility.

Kofi Anna was elected for his position under enormous international controversy. Even though he lost the elections to Butros Ghali, the US flexed some muscle and Kofi Annan became the UN chief. The international community did not know what to expect of this man, yet it gradually became obvious that Annan was making tangible progress. The UN, under Annan's leadership, helped East Timor towards independence, assisting the post-war administration of Kosovo. Kofi annan has also expanded the UN's work to include environmental protection, the fight against AIDS, and an unprecedented emphasis on individual human rights.

Yet in order for Kofi Annan and the UN to gain complete credibility, they will need to address all aspects of the international system of states with the same enthusiasm and dedication.

Resolutions to the Third World in general, and the Middle East in particular, have been placed on the back burner for decades. Resolutions such as 242, 338, and 194 have been ignored by the international community. The longer such resolutions are ignored, the more difficult it will be to address these old and constantly changing policies.

For the Palestinians in particular, the UN must play a more active role in upholding the principles of justice and democracy; namely by working to see the full implementation of the mentioned resolutions, pertaining to an independent Palestinian state based on the full Israeli withdrawal from the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem, the dismantlement of illegal Jewish settlements, and the return of the Palestinian refugees.

Annan rose through the ranks of the UN and has gained international respect. He was able to ease conflict between the UN and the US Congress, making his organization stronger. His leadership is moral, realistic, and involved. Yet he should engage with governments ad stake-holders in search of fair and just solutions. Mr. Annan is in a position to make this world a better place, through implementing old resolutions and starting a new era of equality and justice for all.
