Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

While the Israeli government continues to intoxicate the Israeli people (and the international community) with delusional politics and hot air rhetoric, thereby distorting the reality of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, there is increasing Israeli dismay with Ariel Sharon's policy of brute military force as a means of dealing with the Palestinians. The number of Israelis killed since Sharon's election in May 2001 seems to confirm an equation of direct proportionality: more military force by the Israeli army means more Palestinian military resistance, thus more Israeli aggression.

The past 17 months have proven that a military solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is out of the question; it is a shortsighted interpretation of reality that only adds more volatile ingredients to an already explosive equation of violence.

Unfortunately, the past 17 months also seem to confirm that Sharon lacks the will and vision for a political solution; militarism and a systematic policy of bashing the Palestinians into submission is the only option for a man that spent the better part of his career at the forefront of a military institution designed to sustain military occupation, thus directly surpassing any pragmatic solutions for an essentially political conflict.

Today, the situation on the ground is more entrapped in violence than at any other time during the current Palestinian Intifada (uprising against occupation). Daily Israeli strikes against predominantly civilian Palestinian targets have taken the death toll to alarming levels, the continuation of Israel's policy of strangulation through military siege is choking the Palestinian people and driving them into unprecedented levels of frustration with the Israeli leadership (including the silent Israeli "peace camp"), and the increasing frequency of Israel's political assassinations and extra-judicial killings is ample proof of Israel's willful neglect to the most fundamental political freedoms (freedom of expression).

Sharon finds himself desperate to survive the failures of his policies. The return to Palestinian-Israeli political dialogue is inevitable; hence, a pragmatic approach towards the current conflict will reemerge. For Sharon, the solution is clearly more militarism, more aggression, and more policies to sustain occupation. For the Palestinians, Israelis, and the international community the reality predetermines the policies: an end to occupation is the only viable solution.

It is, therefore, imperative that the international community takes a stance with the only constructive alternative to Sharon's disastrous approach and start realizing a true vision for peace through negotiation and a settlement based on legality (UN Resolutions 242, 338, and 194). Until this new (and inevitable) paradigm re-emerges in Palestinian-Israeli relations, we are bound to witness more military aggression by Sharon's government, and while the political forces move back towards proactive efforts to end the violence, both the Palestinian and Israeli people will remain captive to the horrors of shelling, strangulation, suicide attacks, and bloodshed.
