Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

In most cultures and places around the world, come the end of the year, one reflects on what passed in order to make a few resolutions to try to learn from past experience and challenge oneself with the ultimate aim of improving oneself. In Palestine, the pace of fateful events is so quick, and year after year seems to pass while people are too consumed with the contingencies of everyday life to reflect objectively, with sufficient calmness and with self-criticism. In Palestine, the New Year’s Resolution has become more like a spontaneous, fleeting wish that one makes before blowing out the candles on a birthday cake.

The past year has brought many changes which require a real process of reflection, if nothing else then in order to minimize the pitfalls we Palestinians are so infamous for never missing. With elections around the corner and an “end to an era”, we should perhaps wonder, is it an end to an era, or an end to an approach? In what state do we find our relations with the rest of the world? What are we planning for the upcoming year? How are we going to work and what programs will we implement? What are the red lines; do we still have red lines? What are our aspirations, are they dreams? What are our values, have they remained the same? Do we reflect our values or even reflect on them?

On obstacles and excuses: were do we stand? On positive interventions, can they come from inside? Will we continue to be panicked, stressed, or tricked? In any event, changes are coming, so let us either keep or get our priorities straight. Let us try to make 2005 a year of success, a year of respect for human rights, a year of self-realization, a year of independence, a year of steadfast solidarity, a year of generosity, tolerance, love, health, happiness, joy and peace. The point is not that we want these things like we want the objects of birthday wishes. The point is that we need these things. The point is, further, that we also have a right to each of them.

If we are determined, if we are lucky, if we are brave, we may even make some of these things come true in the coming year. Inshallah. If not, we will at least have tried, and we will try again, for instance, try to write a similar article next year.
