Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

In the wake of the latest Israeli assaults against the Palestinian people, and amid the devastating loss of life and destruction of the Palestinian infrastructure, Israel has all but completely destroyed the prospects of peace in the region.

Israel's aggressive measures against Palestinian civilians, international inability to act, US support for Israel, and Palestinian frustration with the current Israeli government have created a new momentum of distrust and hostility that is bound to haunt the region and fuel more bloodshed, at least for the immediate future.

Following its unprecedented wave of incursions into the West Bank, Israel has undermined the remaining (fundamental) cornerstones of the Oslo Agreement of 1993, thereby negating the land-for-peace equation and shortsightedly reviving the Palestinian-Israeli existential debate.

This illusion has been imposed by Sharon on both the Palestinian and Israeli people; stagnant as it was, the post Oslo era managed to get both public opinions into a mode of 'mutual acceptance' and potential reconciliation. Sharon, with his militaristic perception of reality, and lack of political agenda, has tragically shattered all modest achievement after Oslo.

What is needed at this stage is a firm stance by the international community to oppose Sharon's aspirations for further destruction and further hostility against the Palestinian people and leadership. The fragmentation of Palestinian territories must be acknowledged and dealt with as an immediate blow to the prospects of peace that will fuel an already volatile situation; Israeli violations of basic Palestinian human rights must be immediately stopped, not least to reverse Palestinian distrust and anger; and finally, the international community must ensure that any efforts to recreate the negotiations framework must fully incorporate a just solution to the Palestinian people, namely an end to this brutal military occupation.
