Your Key to Palestine

I saw on TV the last efforts made by the settlers to resist there being moved out of Gaza. I was touched by the despair in their voices as they were asking the soldiers not to implement their orders. It must be terrible to be forced to abandon the house one has lived in for decades! I share their pain.

If only they were like me. If only they could feel the pain inflicted to the hundreds of thousands of Palestinians by the like of themselves! Are the Israelis humans, and the Palestinians animals?

The two situations are not identical. The settlers were treated with sympathy. No one of them was hurt. No one of them was threatened with weapons. They were given large compensations. They were moved to live among Israelis in Israeli territory which they should not have left in the first place.

When it comes to the sufferings of the settlers, the Israeli authorities themselves are obviously empathizing with the expelled settlers. As to the settlers, they seem totally unable to make an association between their terrible sufferings, and the sufferings so much greater imposed on the Palestinian refugees.

In this insensitivity of the settlers and of most Israelis towards the Palestinian, we can find the origin of the difficulty in resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

A distance has been created, maintained and constantly increased between the two people. This distance explains why the Israelis have difficulty feeling the sufferings of the Palestinians, a difficulty that fringes racism.

How this can be addressed is dealt with in "stumbling blocks" where a complete strategy for the satisfaction of the Palestinian aspirations can be found.

An important aspect of the disengagement is that the finality of "facts on the grounds" is a myth. They can be reversed. Once it has been made in Gaza, it could, with a proper strategy, be done in all the remaining of the settlements in the West Bank.

Another aspect of the disengagement is the lack of interference of Hamas. Quite probably, they will later claim having defeated Israel. We must take notice that while Israel retreats from isolated settlements, they progress in parts of the West Bank bordering Israel.

Now, Sharon is praised in the West for having "demonstrated" his peaceful intention. It is up to the Palestinian people, if possible supported by its PA leadership, to disabuse Sharon and those Western leaders supporting Sharon.

Finally, the Israeli having "disengaged" from Gaza, the Israeli remaining on occupied territories may wonder if they are coming next. I hope that the PA authority, representing the Palestinian people who suffered much more when forced to leave the houses were there parents and grandparents were born would declare that the Palestinian people empathize with the worries of those Israelis still on occupied territories and are offering them the following.

They may remain in their houses on occupied territory on the following conditions:

1) They become Palestinian citizens, recognize the Palestinian laws and promise to respect them.

2) They voluntarily give up their arms. They can get some arms upon receiving the permission from the Palestinian authorities, after demonstrating legitimate needs.

3) They accept without protesting to receive the same individual quota of water and electricity as the rest of the Palestinians

4) Any amount of money they would receive from relatives, institutions or government is to be given to the PA to be shared with all the Palestinian people. We the Palestinians are accepting you in our midst as brothers, on the understanding that you will act as such

5) Your children will attend the Palestinian schools. You are free to send them, additionally, to evening Jewish schools for a number of hours which does not exceeds half the number of hours in public schools.

6) You will be free to ask and receive exemption from military service. We hope you will realize that a Palestinian army, will be an army dedicated to peace and to the defense of Palestine which would have become your country too.
