There has recently been a deplorable spate of abductions and extra-judicial killings in Gaza and the West Bank, perpetrated on innocent foreigners and Palestinians alike by various militant groups who have no respect for the rule of law and for the sanctity of human life. In late August, Mr. Mohammad Ouathi, a soundman for French television channel France 3, was kidnapped by unidentified gunmen in Gaza. Also in August, five UN employees in Gaza were similarly kidnapped by anonymous masked gunmen. While the French journalist and the UN employees were subsequently released unharmed, the latest kidnap victim, an Israeli citizen named Sisson Nuriel, was blindfolded, videotaped, and, in an horrific imitation of similarly brutal acts elsewhere in the Middle East, eventually killed.

These kidnappings have done great disservice to the Palestinian cause and to the Palestinian people, for a variety of reasons. In the first place, they negate the very values and principles on which the fundamental Palestinian claims to justice and freedom are based. Second, they are often targeted at innocent individuals who are doing their best to promote Palestinian rights. Third, they often retard what little hope for justice the Palestinians have (in the case of the killing of Sasson Nuriel, for example, Israel’s justice minister cancelled, in retaliation, his scheduled meeting with a Palestinian official to discuss the prisoner release issue). And finally, they provide ample evidence for the persistent Israeli claims of Palestinian violence and brutality against civilians, which are in turn used as justifications for continued Israeli violence and occupation.

While there has been provocation enough in recent days on account of violent Israeli attacks on Palestinian civilians and public infrastructure in the West Bank and Gaza, and the unexplained arrests of hundreds of Palestinians in the West Bank, these heinous kidnappings cannot be condoned by any Palestinian, including those on whose behalf these acts are claimed to have been perpetrated.

While President Abbas and several high-ranking Palestinian officials have called for the end to all such kidnappings and murders, much more needs to be done to restore to the Palestinians the tenuous hopes for peace and order they have had since the disengagement in Gaza, and much more needs to be done to make amends for the crimes themselves, which provide a shocking reminder of some of the worst acts of violence perpetrated by humans against humans in the Middle East.
