Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

President Bush and Secretary of State Powell met with the Arab troika made up of Jordanian, Saudi and Egyptian foreign ministers in Washington on Thursday. The three leaders left the meeting feeling 'encouraged' as Bush and Powell reassured them with yet another vague Bush statement "We're going to continue to work for peace, to push hard for peace." The word peace has been abused so often that it has lost its meaning for in the name of peace we have seen the occupation gain more support without corresponding criticism. The Palestinians are desperate for peace, for while the average Israeli might be scared of public transportation, the average Palestinian is scared of being shot or struck by a missile while sitting at their homes in their urban neighborhoods which have been turned into military detention camps by Israeli forces.

The Arab foreign ministers were happy to tell the Arab media about the proposed four step plan to Palestinian statehood and towards 'peace' with Israel. First the declaration of a Palestinian state by January, right after the so-called 'democratic' elections in which the Americans and the Israelis will choose who can be 'democratically' elected. Moreover, this state will lack sovereignty in any sense of the word, as it will be a state placed in the crushing hand of Israel. The second step provides for a new constitution designed to endow a 'democratically' elected a Prime Minister with the power to lead the PNC, or as we currently know it the PLC. Furthermore, it calls for separation of power between the legislative and judicial.

Implementing this constitution leads into a third step which is forming a new government that will also be dictated by America and Israel, as they only recognize a number of leaders as people they will speak with, regardless of who the Palestinians want representing them. The last point involves placing Arafat as a ceremonial figurehead, a president by name only, therefore sidestepping Arafat despite the reluctance of the EU, UN and Russia who need the full support of the Palestinians in this decision.

Unfortunately, the Arab position is weaker than that of the Quartet, excluding America, for they openly disagreed with the American 'forceful democracy.' No one has alluded to the Israelis that they are not allowed to have a war criminal, Ariel Sharon, for Prime Minister. The daily viscous annihilation of Palestinians is perfectly excused and the so-called 'relative calm' is only disturbed when an Israeli dies. During this past period of 'relative calm' 25 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces 15 of which are women and children under the age of 18. In the world's eyes a Palestinian life is not even worth half as much as an Israeli life. Until there is justice and protection for the oppressed Palestinian people, they will not stand to be dictated.

Renaming and shuffling positions will not offer hope to the Palestinians who view America as occupation supporter. American credibility is at stake for they are bending backwards to humiliate and discriminate against a people who have become so innovative at resisting occupation and very much aware of world politics and expectations. It is the nature of the oppressor, who never really feels the pain of occupation, to demand more from the weak and place the blame and burden on them. However, it is the oppressed that truly strives for peace and are willing to sacrifice through compromises and concessions. The Palestinians have been living in harsh conditions for too long, and as much as they want peace they are not going to give in to demands that contradict their democratic ideals in the idle name of 'reform and democracy.' Bush's vision has only served to empower the current Palestinian leadership, for the Palestinian people will stand with their own against the powers of submission, corrupt capitalism and occupation.

"We shall overcome…… someday"
