Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

Shortly after midnight, on Tuesday, July 23, 2002 as Palestinians were sleeping in their homes, secured and tucked away, Israel launched a devastating attack obliterating a residential area and murdering 15 civilians, 9 of whom were under the age of 13. Beyond those killed 140 civilians were wounded with ten being in critical condition. This crushing blitz came courtesy of the F16 fighter jets supplied by America whose missiles tore through four apartment blocks. Surveying the resulting carnage leaves a look of utter shock as body parts lay over the entire site. According to Israel the operation targeted a Hamas leader, Salah Shahadeh, who died along with his wife and three children the youngest of whom was only two months old.

This attack comes in response to an earlier call by Hamas and other resistance groups for a complete halt of any attacks against Israel. Ahmad Yassin, the Hamas spiritual leader, told reporters, "Once the occupation [of West Bank cities] and all those measures against our people stop, we are ready to totally stop martyrdom operations." This positive development, intended to place pressure on Israel to withdraw from the cities it has placed under curfew for over 30 days, has now been curtailed by this Israeli attack, as Hamas vows for revenge.

This latest Israeli attack grievously threatens escalating the conflict and was condemned fervently by the Palestinian Authority who has repeatedly asked for international protection for the Palestinians in light of this policy of blatantly targeting civilians. Sharon and his extreme government continue to spark up the violence whenever there is hope for a solution, inflaming Palestinian hatred by their illegal policy of extra-judicial killings. After Arafat's speech on Dec. 16th, which called for a seize fire and was followed by a period of calm, Sharon was criticized for assassinating a Palestinians political figure, Raed Al-Karmeh, provoking another round of violence.

The current Israeli government has no intentions to move forward with the political process, preferring to thrive on war and realizing that their lack of will to make peace and end the occupation of the Palestinians leaves them with no choice but to make sure the violence and death continues so they can remain in power. Israel does not want peace; rather, they want a piece of Palestinian children's flesh. Meanwhile, the Untied Nations strongly condemned the attack against civilians in Gaza, but the White House has remained characteristically silent. The fact that the skies were ripped open as the Israeli army pelted the women and children seems unworthy of American condemnation. May they rest in peace, for they stand alone before a world that views' Palestinian children's blood as worthless.
