Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

With only two days left for Palestinians to make their voices heard loud and clear in the second Palestinian national legislative elections, it is time to credit and respect the Palestinians for their democratic ideals and values. For the second time in the short history of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), Palestinians, including Jerusalemites, will be going to the ballots to choose the people who will represent them for the next four years in the Palestinian Legislative Council. All this while they are still under a military occupation by, some say, the fifth mightiest military power in the world.

The Palestinian electorate will have the choice for the first time under the new and improved Election Law to vote for deputies not only from their own respective constituencies, but also candidates from 11 national lists. The national lists are as follows, (1) The Alternative, (2) Independent Palestine, (3) Martyr Abu Ali Mustafa list, (4) Martyr Abu el-Abbas List, (5) Freedom and Social Justice, (6) Change and Reform, (7) The National Coalition for Justice and Democracy (Wa'ad), (8) The Third Way, (9) Freedom and Independence, (10) The Palestinian Justice and finally (11) The Palestinian National Liberation Movement –Fatah.

The Palestinian people living in Occupied Palestine made their voice heard for the first time in 1996, where they voted for a legislature and a president. Needless to say, Palestinians set the standard in the wider Arab world. The second show of democracy came after the tragic and mysterious death of President Arafat in November 2004, when Palestinians went to the polling stations to elect Abu Mazen as the president of the Palestinian National Authority.

It cannot be stressed enough how important these elections are. First and foremost these elections are long overdue, after a failed peace process with Israel, legislative elections were supposed to take place in 1999. Then, almost six years of Palestinian uprising, constant closures and daily incursions made elections virtually and practically impossible.

Voting in these elections is both a right and a duty for Palestinians. The elections will not only lend legitimacy to the authority that governs Palestine, but will also bring about a just representation for the Palestinian people. Finally, it is a national duty that Palestinians take part in laying the foundations for the next government that will rule them.

As an impartial NGO and a fervent believer in democracy, MIFTAH has one message to convey to the Palestinian people go: and vote for a brighter future.
