Hamas' sweeping victory in last week's Palestinian legislative elections has unmistakably underlined a paradigm shift in Palestinian political life, let alone a major turning point in the dynamics of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Whether as a protest vote against the corruption and mismanagement of the previously FATEH-led Palestinian Authority, a hopeful vote for real "change and reform," or as a genuine vote for an Islamic political movement, Hamas' 74 seats in parliament (out of 132) are a striking reminder of the new reality with which the Palestinians, the Israelis, and the international community at large will have to come to terms. How will the world react to Hamas' coming to power?

So far, international responses to Hamas' election victory have been somewhat predictable; once again, the US administration has failed to fulfil its expected role as "impartial broker" by racing even Israel's leaders to demand that Hamas recognises "Israel's right to exist" before forming the new Palestinian government.

Ironically, it is the Palestinian people's right to exist (to progress, to live, to speak freely, and to move freely, among other universally-adopted human rights) which has been under constant threat by Israel since 1967. Would it have been too wishful to expect some mention by US officials of Israel's legal obligations to end its occupation of the Palestinian territories, to stop building its Wall and illegally annex almost 46% of the West Bank to Israel, and to dismantle all Jewish settlements, which, for as long as almost 4 decades, have been deemed illegal by international law? Apparently, such great expectations will have to be compromised for now, as the US will first need to ensure that a Hamas-led Palestinian government is silently obedient to the conditions dictated by Washington and Tel Aviv.

As the implications of the Palestinian legislative elections unfold in the coming weeks and months, particularly in relation to the changing international policies towards the new Palestinian government, Hamas itself will undoubtedly undergo a process of self-evaluation and an assessment of its transformation from political outcast towards a ruling political majority. Its positions, particularly vis-à-vis Israel, will have to be re-evaluated, reshaped, and re-asserted; its internal political programme will also need to be readjusted and reintegrated into a wider context.

This process must not be undermined by either the international community, including Israel, or by the Palestinian opposition. On the contrary, it should be embraced and accepted as a crucial progression towards political maturity within the Palestinian system of governance; after all, we all need to see the true face of "official Hamas."
