Brutalized villagers defy settler violence and return to their homes; praise role of media and foreigners.

The stand-off over the future of the Palestinian village Yanoun in the face of increasingly violent Israeli settler attacks took a new turn yesterday when men from the village refused to be scared out of their homes.

Five males residents in their forties of Yanoun village returned to their homes last night with a team of Israeli and international peace monitors, vowing that they would not be intimidated to leave their homes.

"We are very lonely without our families here, but it was impossible to convince them to come back with us after they have been terrorized by the Israeli settlers for so long," said Abdullah Sbeeh, head of the Yanoun local council. "Our plan is to get all of our families back here gradually - but international concern for our plight will be key to the success of this plan."

Sbeeh has been violently attacked by Israeli settlers seven times in the last five years. He praised the role of the media and other international observers for drawing attention to the plight of the villagers.

"We were not attacked last night, but this is because of the presence of internationals and Israeli peace activists," said Sbeeh. "If international attention fades, you can be sure that they will be back to their usual attacks, as this is their habit - and probably even more angry and violent."

Today, eight of the families from Yanoun village now seeking refuge in the neighbouring village of Aqraba went to harvest olives in their fields with the help of international monitors. It was the first time they were able to harvest their olives without being attacked by Israeli settlers for years.

"We need this attention to our plight to continue," said Sbeeh. "Otherwise, we will be back at square one, with settler attacks beginning in the fields and then moving closer and closer until we are being attacked in our own homes once again."
