WHAT: (MIAMI, FL, 2/5/2003) The March For Justice, a national human and civil rights group, is launching "The March For Peace" out of Overtown, Miami in solidarity with a National Day of Protest to stop the war and in advocacy of preservation and betterment of our local communities. The March For Peace will begin with a rally and will continue with a march down the neighborhood streets.

In a joint statement released by The March For Peace, Elvira Williams and Sara Rae, Co-chairwomen of the steering committee, stated:

"As the U.S. seems to be determined to inflict more death and destruction upon innocent people in distant lands, we stand in solidarity with all groups, rallies and functions in opposition to the upcoming war. With The March For Peace, we at The March For Justice, merely continue to carry out our obligations to our communities that are most affected by war and call on all people of conscience to reach out to their neighbors and to build a unified front for peace."

In introducing The March For Peace, Nidal Sakr, Chairman of The March For Justice, stated:

"As the U.S. war administration continues to reveal its vision of 'the new world order' as a war-ravaged world, we must not forget what war is. War is nothing but death and destruction for all with no winners but all losers. In addition to our brethren victims in Palestine, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Bush's ever-growing list of target countries, we too pay an ultimate price here at home. One of the early victims of war was our civil liberties and rights with the introduction of US Patriot Act, followed by an endless trail of measures that serve no purpose but to erode our quality of life with no increase, whatsoever, to our security or peace.

Our own first victims are, and always have been, the 'disadvantaged' amongst us. Name tags of our soldiers who fall down on the front lines will undoubtedly read anything but Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, or Aschcroft. The bulk of our 'foot soldiers' are Native Americans, Blacks, Puerto Ricans and minorities as well as 'underprivileged' whites. Our ‘disadvantaged’ brethren are systematically denied an opportunity for a dignified life in order to keep fueling the war machine as their only option for 'secured incomes.' These communities are the first ones to pay the price of war as social welfare programs are the first to be cut. Our veterans are discarded and long forgotten, many of whom suffer from war-related syndromes.

While we may not be able to stop a blind war machine that destroys all in her path, we surely can stand united as people of all colors, races, religions, and income brackets to build a unified home front. World peace starts with peace at home. Only when we all speak with one voice in solidarity with one another will our voices overcome the noise of explosions, destruction, and death. While we continue our statewide mobilization in solidarity with our coalition partners, we call upon all Floridians to support rallies and functions held throughout the state."

WHEN: Saturday, February 15, 2003, 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. EST

WHERE: The Rally begins on the corner of NW 14th St. & N. Miami Court, Overtown-Miami (parking is available).
