Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

Thursday, April 17, is the anniversary of the Palestinian Prisoner’s Day. Palestinian prisoners and detainees have gone on hunger strike to mark this day and to demand better detention conditions.

LAW’s attorney Fahmi Shkirat visited al-Ramla prison on Wednesday, April 16, and met with four Palestinian prisoners from Jerusalem and Bethlehem. Prisoners told Shkirat that prison authority opened a new section, which can accommodate 88 prisoners. Moreover, 20 Palestinian detainees have been moved from the Russian Compound detention center in Jerusalem to the new section.

There are approximately 128 Palestinian detainees held at the old section of al-Ramla prison, including sick detainees, in miserable conditions.

According to the prisoners, prison authority deprives Palestinian prisoners of basic hygiene including soap, shaving cream, and toothpaste justifying that by budget deficit.

Al-Ramla prison also bans food sent by Palestinian prisoners’ families to their imprisoned children. It is worth mentioning that food at Israeli prisons is of an appalling quality.

Prisoners asserted that the al-Ramla authority intentionally neglects healthcare leaving sick prisoners without medical attention.

LAW calls on the international community to immediately intervene and urge the Israeli authorities to release Palestinian prisoners. LAW also calls upon the international community to urge Israel to apply the 4th Geneva Convention to the Palestinian territories thus hold Palestinian prisoners at prisons within the Palestinian territories.
