Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

Today, Tuesday, June 10, 2003, Israeli Apache gunships carried out a failed assassination attempt against Hamas' political leader Dr. Abdul Aziz al-Rantisi. Rantisi escaped the Israeli attack, however, a Palestinian woman and an 8-year-old girl were killed. 27 Palestinians were injured including al-Rantisi, his son Ahmad, and two of his aides; some of the wounded are in critical condition.

According to LAW's information, an Israeli Apache fired 4 missiles at al- Rantisi's car traveling near al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza city at around 11:20 AM.

LAW Society strongly condemns Israel's attempt to assassinate Dr. al- Rantisi; LAW Society also condemns Israel's policy of extra judicial execution against Palestinian political activists.

LAW Society asserts that the Israeli policy of extra judicial execution, which is approved by the Israeli government, is blatant violation of the international humanitarian law especially the Fourth Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War of 1949 and the Protocol Additional to the Geneva Convention of 12 August 1949 relating to the Protection of Victims of International Armed Conflicts.

LAW Society demands:

1. The Israeli government to immediately stop its crimes and collective punishment against Palestinian people; 2. An international investigation committee to be set up, working according to UN Resolution 1322; 3. The Security Council to establish an international tribunal and bring the Israeli war criminals to justice, such as the case with the war in ex-Yugoslavia; 4. To place Palestinian under international protection; 5. The EU to take effective steps, based on Article 2 of Euro- Israeli Partnership Agreement, which states that Israel must respect human rights.
