Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

To be attributed to an official Palestinian source in the ministry of security affairs:

Palestinian National Authority state minister for security affairs and commissioner of the interior ministry Mohammad Dahlan warned that Israel’s failure to implement its part of the roadmap plan would not help pushing the peace process forward and is very likely to cause an eruption of a new confrontation.

In a meeting the minister held with Condoleezza Rice, the national security advisor to US President George Bush in Washington, Dahlan listed the number of measures the PNA has taken in accordance to the roadmap requirements and demanded that a timetable be set for Israel to start implementing its part of the deal, mainly the release of the Palestinian prisoners incarcerated in Israel, the cessation of construction works in the separation fence and the settlement activities and lifting the siege on President Yasser Arafat.

“The meeting was held in a serious atmosphere and the national security advisor listened carefully to the detailed presentation we outlined on the overall situation and on the need to achieve a considerable and a significant progress on the ground so that the truce declared by the various Palestinian factions holds on,” said Dahlan after the meeting.

He later joined the prime minister, Mahmoud Abbas, in a meeting that was held with Rice. The Palestinian prime minister and the rest of the Palestinian delegation later met with the international relations committee in the congress and with Congressman Howard Berman along with a number of congressmen. The Palestinian delegation, in addition to Abu Mazen and Dahlan, comprised of Finance Minister Salam Fayyad, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Nabil Shaath, and Palestinian Legislative Council Speaker Ahmad Qurei’.

Palestinian official sources said the in all the meetings, the Palestinian delegation raised a number of demands and insisted that the US Administration make more effort with the Israeli government in order for the latter to start the implementation of its part of the roadmap and to prevent the collapse of the current momentum that started with the introduction of the roadmap and the declaration of the truce. Those two steps, the sources said, are considered to be the appropriate mechanism to pave the way for a just and comprehensive peace agreement in the region.

Meanwhile, Minister Dahlan warned Israel against trying to harm any of the Palestinians considered wanted by the Israeli army and said that any step of this kind by Israel will inevitably lead to the collapse of the ceasefire which had been endorsed by the various Palestinian factions. In this respect, an official security source in the PNA characterized reports generated in Israel about talks between Palestinian and Israeli security officers to reach a deal by which the PNA would absorb the wanted Palestinians as premature and inaccurate. The source said that the PNA would prefer to tackle sensitive issues away from the media in order not to jeopardize the chances of reaching an agreement on certain issues, mainly issues of high sensitivity to the public. “Not every negotiation held through the press leads to positive results,” said the source.
