Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

Yesterday I passed the place of the last suicide bombing in Jerusalem which killed among others Dr Applebaum and his daughter preparing for her wedding. The same day I saw in Gaza the place where Mahmoud al-Zahar escaped an assassination attempt by the Israeli Defence Force but which killed his son, a student on holiday from Britain, also just before his wedding.

The deaths of these two young people, one Israeli one Palestinian, neither involved in politics, on the eve of their future happiness should symbolize the wickedness and futility of mutual violence in this region. I am here today not to discuss political solutions but humanitarian crises.

I am visiting the territory in company with the Chief Executive of MAP, Belinda Coote, and the medical staff of the charity. MAP is a small charity well supported by private donations as well as by British governments and the European Union throughout its 20 years existence.

The visits were in Bethlehem, Jerusalem and Ramallah where I saw the construction of the wall, about which I believe both the outside world and the Israeli people are largely ignorant. It is portrayed as a "defensive wall" by Israel to keep out terrorists, but only a fraction is on the internationally recognized green line boundary. Most is incursion into Palestinian land, cutting off and dividing communities thus making the delivery of essential medical and social support difficult ifnot impossible. This construction is a crime against humanity.

The 1917 Balfour Declaration which proposed the establishment of the state of Israel declared: "it being clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing nonJewish communities in Palestine." I believe this wall transgresses the most basic civil rights of the Palestinian people by restricting freedom of movement, even ambulances.

In Gaza I visited our assisted projects. At the Ai Wedad Association for Social Rehabilitation we saw the skillful work of teachers and social workers with children who have suffered traumas from experiencing the violence which pervades that area. We also went to Ai Wafa hospital where among the patients that we saw were victims of that violence permanently damaged. We also saw the room where two nurses were shot by a sniper earlier this year. I express my admiration for those who lavish care and affection on these innocent victims of violence.

Throughout my visit I saw the effects of widespread poverty. The level has increased from 22% three years ago to nearly 60%. This rise in social inequality is unacceptable and a real threat to peace in the region and places great strain on MAP's budget by increasing the demand for emergency humanitarian assistance.

Today I met President Arafat whom I have met half a dozen times over the last twenty years. I stressed to him as I shall tomorrow with Israeli politicians the need to end violence and resume dialogue.
