In the early hours of the morning of Monday 24 October 2004, the Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) started a new incursion in the town of Khan Younis in the south of the Gaza Strip. Due to excessive use of force in the populated refugee camp, the IOF had killed 14 Palestinians and injured 58 by the time of issuing this release. They also demolished three homes, and caused damage to numerous others, and to the Mubarak Children’s Hospital. The incursion ended at 5:30am.

The IOF started building up troops near Khan Younis refugee camp at 8:30pm on Sunday 23 October 2004 under air cover. One hour later, they launched a missile towards a Palestinian security post near Mubarak Hospital. They also launched seven other missiles on the area between 9:30pm and 1am. Tanks and bulldozers stormed into Batn As Sameen neighborhood west of the town of Khan Younis and bulldozed three homes. The missile attacks and machine gun fire caused severe damage to the hospital and numerous homes.

At 11am today, the IOF fired artillery towards An Namsawi neighborhood in the town, killing one Palestinian and wounding eight. This raised the toll of Palestinians killed in Khan Younis to 14, including two children. According to the Center's investigations, nine people have been killed from missile launches and five from live bullets. The following is a list of their names:

Additionally, 58 people have been injured, of whom 32 were injured by missile shrapnel.

Al Mezan Center for Human Rights condemns Israel's continued aggression in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT). The IOF's targeting of civilians and their property and employment of excessive, disproportionate force in populated areas constitute grave breaches of International Law, which necessitate immediate international intervention.

The Center calls on the High Contracting Parties to the 4th Geneva Convention Relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Times of War to take immediate action to ensure respect for the Convention in the OPT, especially under consideration of the escalating crimes of war perpetrated by the IOF. It is evident that Israel will continue such breaches under the silence of the international community. International intervention is most urgent now, and is a moral and a legal responsibility on the part of the international community.
