PCHR has commissioned a mural in honour of Palestinian women for the annual United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace (8 March). Work on the mural began yesterday and is due to be completed by 6 March.

The mural, which is 20m long and 1.8 high, is being painted by 12 local artists on a wall on the main street of Gaza city, just outside the office of PCHR. It describes Palestinian women, their contribution to the Palestinian cause, and their sufferings in the current situation, using images prepared by the artist Fayez al-Sarsawi and chosen by PCHR.

PCHR Director Raji Sourani called the mural “an expression of the solidarity of Palestinian society with women and a recognition of the role of Palestinian women and their ongoing and enormous contribution to the Palestinian cause.” Al-Sarsawi, who is supervising work on the mural, said that the image is a message of affection and gratitude for Palestinian women, highlighting their patience and steadfastness.

Noting that the Israeli invasion of Palestinian refugee camps in Nablus and Jenin this week was apparently codenamed the ‘Colours Journey,’ al-Sarsawi said: “By depicting the steadfastness of Palestinian women, this mural is a ‘colourful’ answer to Sharon’s policies.”

A number of artists decided to work on the mural to express their support for Palestinian women. Reema al-Muzayin commented that the olive branch in the mural symbolizes the dream of Palestinian women to live in peace, whereas Maha Daya remarked that other parts of the mural symbolize the central role of women in Palestinian society. Maysar al-Barud observed that highlighting the nurturing role of Palestinian women are especially important in light of Israeli accusations that Palestinian parents “send their children to be killed.” Several male artists are also participating in the project to show their support for Palestinian women.

In commissioning this mural, PCHR expresses its support for and solidarity with women in Palestinian society.
