Palestinian women commemorate International Women's Day on 8 March 2005, as they continue to suffer as a result of attacks by Israeli occupation forces (IOF). At this time, Palestinian women also continue their struggle to participate in the process of development and construction of society and to assume leading roles in this process.

Palestinian women are subject to many of the same constraints and hardships that affect women’s lives all over the world. However, they particularly suffer as a result of their political, social, economic and cultural status. Palestinian women have endured all the hardships faced by the whole Palestinian people for 57 years including forced expulsion, killings, dispersion and expropriation of property.

Throughout the Occupied Palestinian Territory (OPT), Palestinian women suffer due to violations of human rights perpetrated by IOF, including incursions, willful and extra-judicial killings, house demolitions and arbitrary arrests. They often have to deal with extra hardship as their husbands are frequently imprisoned by the Israeli authorities thus depriving them and their families from what is generally there main source of income. Palestinian women are also often direct victims of the Israeli occupation; they are killed, injured, arrested and have their land and homes destroyed. IOF have not excluded Palestinian women from suppression and attacks directed against all Palestinian civilians.

Attacks by IOF during the Intifada have led to the deaths of 169 Palestinians women, including 65 children. In addition, 24 sick women died when IOF obstructed their passage through military checkpoints and border crossings and 55 women were forced to give birth at checkpoints. Currently, there are 126 Palestinian women detained under severe conditions in Israeli jails. Palestinian women have also suffered from house raids and demolitions by IOF, which has had a devastating impact on women in particular.

At the Palestinian level, political participation of women significantly increased in 2005. They strongly participated in all aspects of the Palestinian presidential and local elections and accounted for a large number of the voters. The Palestinian law related to election of local councils was also amended to ensure positive discrimination for women; article 28 prescribes that "wherever women are nominated for candidature, at least 2 seats of a local council shall be devoted for the women who obtain the highest number of votes among female candidates." The number of women who were nominated for candidature for elections of 10 local councils in the Gaza Strip (held on 27 January 2005) was 68 out of a total of 414 candidates (16.4%). Palestinian women continue their efforts to participate in the development of the Palestinian society.

Despite their suffering, Palestinian women demonstrate patience and determination. They have continued to struggle for real equality.

While PCHR send special regards to all women around the world, it highly praises Palestinian women, especially victims and mothers and relatives of victims and prisoners, for their struggle and determination.

PCHR calls upon the international community to immediately intervene to stop violations of human rights by IOF, which have had disastrous impacts on Palestinian women. PCHR calls upon the Palestinian National Authority to assist Palestinian women affected by the IOF policies, and to ensure that women enjoy their right to participate in decision making. PCHR also reminds the Palestinian Legislative Council to promulgate laws that can ensure a better status for women, including Law of Social Care, Law of Sharia' Cases and Law of Personal Status. Furthermore, PCHR calls on women to effectively participate in the coming elections of local councils and the Palestinian Legislative Council, to assert themselves and their rights.
