Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

The last two days have seen a continuation of the deterioration of the security situation in the Gaza Strip.

On August 1st, 2005, at around 9.30pm, unknown persons opened fire on a car being driven by members of the Military Intelligence. Two of the passengers were injured, including Faiz Abu Al Ouf, who was seriously wounded.

Around an hour later, another set of unknown individuals opened fire on a car, killing Ahmed Ibrahim, a 35-year-old from Jabalia. Shortly afterwards, members of Ibrahim’s family closed entrances to the western areas of Jabalia camp and neighborhood and started fire in Al Jala’ and Al Saftawy streets.

At around 11pm, a bomb was thrown at the entrance of Palestinian Prosecutor General, Hussein Abu Assy’s house, near the al Salaam mosque in the al Sabra neighborhood of Gaza City. No casualties were reported, but the outside entrance of the house was badly damaged.

At approximately 11.20pm, an explosion occurred in the middle of Bani Sehela town in the east of Khan Younis. The source of the explosion remains unknown. The blast killed 23-year-old Musalem Suleiman Musalem Abu Jamus, a member of National Security. Three others were wounded.

The following day at around 9 am, a number of Palestinians who had previously been detained in Israel broke into the Political Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners Association, and the Palestinian Legislative Council in Rafah. They demanded that they be provided with job opportunities.

Later that day, at around 1.30am, a locally-made rocket landed at the entrance of Nasser hospital in Khan Younis. The rocket did not explode but, shortly afterwards, armed clashes broke out between groups trying to take the rocket.

Al Mezan is deeply concerned about the assault on the Prosecutor General’s house, which aims to terrorize judges, prosecution members and those who work in judicial bodies. Al Mezan reiterates its condemnation of the state of insecurity in Gaza, which continues to jeopardize the personal and societal security of all Palestinians. Al Mezan repeats its call to the Palestinian National Authority to uphold its responsibilities and support the rule of law and to take all necessary steps to put an end to the current state of insecurity.
