Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

Washington, DC, August 24 - The American Task Force on Palestine (ATFP) today warned that a planned expansion of Israel's barrier in the occupied West Bank could have serious consequences for the future of peace in the Middle East, and called on the Bush Administration to intervene. The Israeli government has announced plans to seize large tracts of land from Palestinians to wall off Ma'aleh Adumim, one of the largest Israeli settlements in the West Bank. This would effectively then cut the West Bank into two divided northern and southern sections and increase the isolation and encirclement of Arab East Jerusalem. The Israeli daily Ha'aretz today reported that, "The planned route would put the easternmost point of the fence around Ma'aleh Adumim some 25 kilometers from the Green Line, or about half the width of the West Bank." The planned expansion of the wall would thereby threaten the prospects for creating a viable, contiguous Palestinian state, and intensifies concerns that Israel intends to maintain exclusive control of occupied Arab East Jerusalem. ATFP President Ziad J. Asali said, "The Israeli government has created a new set of opportunities for progress towards peace through its bold disengagement from Gaza, and we call on it to refrain from undermining these hopes by seizing more land around Jerusalem and consolidating its control deep into the West Bank."

Dr. Asali continued, "we urge the Bush Administration to use its influence to ensure that this expansion of the wall does not take place. Now is the time for all parties to work together to seize the opportunity created with the disengagement from Gaza, and build momentum for resuming work on the Roadmap and establishing serious negotiations to fulfill President George W. Bush's vision of a Palestinian state living alongside Israel in peace."

He concluded, "This expansion of the separation barrier would be a historic error. In particular, the isolation and encirclement of Arab East Jerusalem threatens to dangerously deepen the role religious passions may play in relations between Israel and people throughout both the Arab and Islamic worlds into the future. Instead of intensifying the conflict, we should all be looking for ways in which we can build on the opportunities opened by the Gaza disengagement, and work towards an end of conflict based on two states, with a united, shared and open Jerusalem that will serve as the capitals of both Israel and a peaceful, independent Palestine."
