Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

Ramallah – At the Ramallah and Al Bireh governorate, Dr. Laila Ghannamsat down with dozens of women leaders as part of the “Supporting women’s transformative leadership in changing times” program. The program is implemented by MIFTAH in partnership with the Women’s Affairs Center, the Women’s Center for Legal and Social Counseling, the Palestinian Working Women’s Society and Oxfam Novib, with funding from SIDA.

The meeting included young leaders from the AMAL program and from the politically and socially active youth network, according to AMAL coordinator at MIFTAH Abeer Zaghari. She said this was one of a series of meetings aimed at creating a conversational climate to bring together social and political leaders and decision-makers and young leaders with the goal of giving this targeted group access to Palestinian women leaders and learn how they reached decision making positions, in addition to discussing the possibility for these leadersto support youth initiatives. The young leaders also became familiar with the role that social leaders and decision-makers could assume in supporting youths working towards social change.

In this meeting, the young men and women listened to the experience of Dr. Ghannam and her journey which brought her to her current position as Ramallah and Al Bireh governor.

One youth leader, Raed Abu Joudeh from Jiftlik, showcased the experiences of the youths involved in the Amal program including the advocacy and citizenship training they received. He says he considers the experience of Jordan Valley youths to be one of the most successful.

Zeina Ramadan from the politically and socially active youth network then addressed her own group’s achievements. “Through MIFTAH, we were able to reach a joint agreement with more than one team with different perspectives.”

For his part, coordinator for the ‘Empowerment of youth leaders’ at MIFTAH Shadi Zeidat stressed that empowerment and capacity-building cannot be achieved without a system that responds to the existing challenges. “Youth and social issues do exist but addressing these issues is almost nonexistent.” He also stressed on the significance of the deterrent law for socio-cultural change.

Ghannam responded to this by saying that: “The law in and of itself is a deterrent, but still, the penal law must be expedited. This is extremely important in confronting the current social challenges including an increase in murder crimes,” she said, adding that we need to also focus on making changes in our societal culture.

Ghannam stressed to her audience on the issue of competency as a condition for any position or job. “Everyone should have a chance,” she said. “Standards for employment are competency and capability.”

Finally, Ghannam urged her audience to stay positive and not get frustrated. She told them to look at things in a positive light because not everything is negative, stressing on the need to respect and abide by public order and law.
