Ramallah – MIFTAH and the GUPW signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) entitled “Towards the Institutionalization of UNSCR 1325, to achieve peace and security for Palestinian women” funded by OXFAM-Novib.

CEO, Dr. Lily Feidy signed on behalf of MIFTAH while the Head of the GUPW, Ms. Intisar Wazir, signed on behalf of the GUPW. “We are happy to contribute and be a part of efforts to put Resolution 1325 into action,” Wazir said. “This is an excellent initiative for cooperation; if we want our work to make a difference, we must distribute roles among ourselves and unify our political and practical positions. This way we can produce a complete and comprehensive report to send to the UN Secretary General.”

Dr. Feidy also pointed out the importance of the MoU and MIFTAH’s cooperation with GUPW in institutionalizing 1325, especially in light of the latest developments and President Mahmoud Abbas’ signing of the CEDAW agreement. Feidy stressed on the need to support the National Coalition for implementing 1325 in Palestine and in cooperation between its members.

A discussion opened up after the MoU was signed. Both sides agreed that the document was the culmination of efforts for over a month regarding the institutionalization of Resolution 1325 aimed at formulating a unified agenda that guarantees the protection of women and promote their political participation.

Some participants suggested that the focus should be put on formulating a national unified plan by transforming the general framework into a narrative national strategy. The process will engage the members of the Coalition

Participants agreed that much had already been done towards Institutionalizing UNSCR 1325 despite the stumbles on the road. Yet, recommendations were raised to draw the national plan and bylaws to organize the work of the Coalition. Finally, participants acknowledged that the national plan for UNSCR 1325 needs to be integrated in the National Plan on implementing UNSCR 1325 developed by the Ministry of Women’s Affairs.
