Issued by the Acting President of the Council of Arab Ambassadors in Vienna (Austria), His Excellency Ambassador Jalal Al-Deen Al-Ameen (Ambassador of Sudan to Austria), regarding the brutal Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip.

The Council of Arab Ambassadors in Vienna, Austria, held an emergency meeting on 8/1/2009 to discuss the continuing Israeli military assaults against the Gaza Strip, which have claimed the lives of hundreds of innocent civilians to date, most notably children and women.

The Council reaffirmed the necessity of exerting every effort on the part of the international community, particularly the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), to work on achieving an immediate ceasefire in the face of this premeditated criminal assault.

Following the presentation of extended elaborations and discussions by the various ambassadors and representatives, the Council of Arab Ambassadors in Vienna stated that it will fulfil its role by pursuing the following decisions:

  1. To meet with the Austrian Minister of Foreign Affairs in order to urge his Government to continue working on the immediate implementation of UNSC Resolution 1860, and to urge the Republic of Austria (as a non-permanent member of the UNSC, and as an active member of the European Union) to bring Israel to stop its assaults against the Gaza Strip.

  2. To take urgent action in meeting Austrian members of parliament and national and trade union representatives, particularly women’s organizations, NGOs, Governmental Organisations, among others, to contribute immediate humanitarian relief to the Gaza Strip and to support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA), in an attempt to alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people as a result of the massacres being committed by the Israeli occupation forces.

The Council greatly values the role of the Austrian solidarity groups, and the Arab and Islamic communities in particular, especially their public condemnation of the Israeli assaults, through mass demonstration in the various cities of Austria, most notably in the capital Vienna. The Council also values the various calls of these movements for humanitarian relief to the Gaza Strip.

  3. To expand meetings with the non-aligned movement and the Organisation of the Islamic Conference in order to mobilise support and to discuss the implications of the Israeli assaults against the Gaza Strip.

  4. To take action, through Arab ambassadors who enjoy membership of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in Vienna, in order to highlight the latest developments of the Israeli assaults against the Gaza Strip, particularly as Israel is a member of the OSCE, and has violated OSCE’s principles and conventions.

  5. To take action at the level of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna to investigate what has been circulated in the media regarding Israel’s use of non-conventional weapons and material in its assaults against the Gaza Strip (uranium and white phosphorus).

  6. The Council also urges all media outlets not to equate the victim with the oppressor, and to work to shed light on the massacres being committed by Israel against innocent civilians, especially women and children, some of whom have been killed while seeking temporary shelter at an UNRWA school in Gaza.

  7. The Council has decided to keep its meetings open/continuous in order to follow up discussions on the Israeli assaults against the Gaza Strip.
