"MIFTAH gave me the boost I needed to move forward"

MIFTAH's Supporting Young Palestinian Political Leaders project, funded by the Norwegian Representative Office is part of the organization's Good Governance and Democracy Program. The program aims at enabling youth to participate in higher decision making positions in the Palestinian political system, namely in the PLO parties and factions in the West Bank, east Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip. The program operates at three levels: young political leaders, the structure of the Palestinian political system and parties and the social atmosphere supporting the participation of these leaders in advanced decision making positions.

Mohammed Asad Al Sawafeeri, 27 is from Gaza and currently works as an activities supervisor at the Right to Play Organization. He is an activist for children's and youth's rights and a beneficiary of the young political leaders' project in the Gaza Strip. Following is his experience in his own words:

I can honestly say that this "success story" is my own reality and hence makes it a personal success. Still, I feel that whatever I write will not do MIFTAH the justice it deserves. If nothing else, I would like to express my heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to the organization for playing such a pivotal role in my story.

Since the first day I became involved in MIFTAH's workshops and courses as part of their youth leadership program three years ago, I realized this experience would make me a stronger and more unique leader. The experience allowed me to look at important issues in a more accurate problem solving way. I would like to thank all those who formulated the goals of this important program, which fulfills the basic needs of youth in political parties. I would only hope the same could be applied at the higher political level because it builds, develops and informs youths and others on important issues.

MIFTAH gave me the opportunity to better interpret the political reality in which we live and hence strive for excellence and uniqueness. This was through the informative workshops and meetings I attended during my participation in the program. It offered the participants a clear understanding of the painful reality in which Palestinian youths live, including unemployment, a lack of planning, indifference, desperation and depression due to the isolation and marginalization they are forced into as a result of neglect from our leaders.

Just like every other young adult, I have faced many obstacles and hurdles in my life which prevented me from achieving my goals. Still, I persevered and took on a new sense of challenge along with a renewed hope given to me from the organizations that work with youth, first and foremost MIFTAH. They rekindled a hope that there was a way of achieving our dream of building our state through the potentials, strength and brain power of our youth. For that reason, I think all our young people should keep hoping and persevere especially in seeking to achieve their own personal goals for their future along with the collective goal of building our state.

The influence of MIFTAH's program and workshops on my personal life was almost immediately apparent. Soon after I became involved with MIFTAH I won the 2009 UNICEF regional award for best media work on the rights of children in the Middle East and North Africa. In that same year, I also was awarded best trainer at the level of the Gaza Strip in the field of awareness and education on the rights of the child by the Training and Development Center in Gaza. I also received honors from the Dubai press club, the UAE Al Bayan newspaper, the Palestinian Center for Human Rights and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

I can definitely say that MIFTAH was one of the main catalysts behind my success and the honors I have received. Its workshops and courses gave me a much better insight into understanding the state of Palestine's youth. It also gave me to the tools to argue, discuss and negotiate more efficiently and to be able to stand up in front of a crowd and speak. Before I participated in MIFTAH's program I was extremely shy. This gave me the boost I needed to really move forward.
