“MIFTAH laid the cornerstone for our development”

In its continuous effort to promote development in Palestinian communities through the participation of various sectors of society, MIFTAH is carrying out a project entitled “Fostering Community Change in the Occupied Palestinian Territory”. The Oxfam UK project is implemented in partnership with MIFTAH, Pal Vision, the Women Studies Centre and Ansar Centre and funded by the EU.

The program aims at capacity building in local communities; empowering communities in the oPt to actively participate in community development processes by teaching them tools for conflict resolution; to promote effective networking among the Ministry of Local Governance, related ministries, civil society organizations and community-based organizations, to actively respond to the local communities’ needs and demands and to raise awareness of Palestinian residents in local communities on Citizen Rights. The program targets five areas distributed among the Jordan Valley region, (Fasayel, Zbeidat, Jiftlik, Al Ouja) and (Walaja) Bethlehem.

Faeda Zbeidat speaks to us about her experience as a participant in MIFTAH’s project.

Could you tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Faeda Zbeidat and I come from the village of Zbeidat in the Jericho region. I’m 23 years old and a third year student of science at Al Quds Open University in Ramallah. I’m married and the mother of two children. I continued my education after I married even though my studies were interrupted during my pregnancies and after I had the children. However, I never gave up on finishing my education.

Tell us a little bit about Zbeidat

My village is small with a population of around 2,000, all of whom are from the Zbeidat family. Everyone basically gets along. There is one school for girls and another for boys along with a health clinic. The village falls between Jordan Valley settlements and the village of Marj Al Ghazal. I have a demolition order on my house since it is located in Area C. Most people work in agriculture in the neighboring settlements, both men and women.

What prompted you to participate in MIFTAH’s project and how did you get started?

We were first introduced to MIFTAH through the Ru’ya Organization. MIFTAH then started coming to Zbeidat and making contact with us through its Fostering Community Change in the OPT project. The idea piqued my curiosity at first and then my desire to learn and benefit from the project actually pushed me to participate. I wanted to develop both at the personal and community level. I have been involved in MIFTAH’s project for a year and a half.

What has MIFTAH’s activities added to your personal and academic experience?

Truth is, I learned a lot from participating in the activities and workshops offered and I felt I gained the knowledge and experience I wanted to develop in myself. I learned new things and met all different types of people because the project targets different social sectors including farmers, teachers, children and women among others. Also, my participation in the activities, especially those aimed at promoting women, boosted my self confidence. I didn’t used to feel comfortable addressing people, whether in my own community or with my colleagues and teachers at university. Thanks to the workshops and activities, I have overcome my fears and hesitation.

Do you think your participation in these workshops will help you move forward in your professional life and open new doors for you?

Definitely. I am more visible in my own village and I have gained the respect and appreciation of everyone because of my work and concern for benefiting my community. I also have a lot of support from my family. My husband is very supportive and encourages me to attend and participate in MIFTAH’s workshops. I have learned to organize all my activities at home, at school and my social work.

How would you assess MIFTAH among other organizations you’ve worked with?

MIFTAH is different than other organizations in a good way because its work isn’t limited to theoretical workshops. It actually works on the ground and scores tangible results. This makes it unique and its impact is clear among the various sectors of society because MIFTAH was able to attract people to participate. Each time more and more people want to sign up.

Do you feel the project’s activities are fulfilling the needs of your community?

There is a real desire to participate in the project here in Zbeidat; people want to learn. The project has truly benefited some sectors of our community such as women; the fact that women are even coming to these activities in a conservative community such as Zbeidat is an achievement in and of itself. For many of these women, this was their first time participating in any kind of project, thanks to MIFTAH.

How would you like to see your community develop?

Truth is, we are lacking in a lot of things. We don’t have a women’s center for example; we didn’t even have a women’s committee in the village council. After MIFTAH came to Zbeidat, we came out with an initiative to create a women’s committee. Now there are two. We are hoping to establish a women’s center. We started networking with other development organizations we got to know through MIFTAH, which was the cornerstone of our advancement. From there we took off. On that note, I would like to thank MIFTAH for their initiative and hope they will continue to work with us so we can move forward and reach new heights.
