Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

Ramallah – MIFTAH recently held a general policy meeting entitled: “Strategic visions in the political system” with the participation of representatives from official and women’s institutions, national forces the private and public sector, academia and civil society institutions. Representatives from the PLO, Fatah’s Central Committee and independent political figures were also present.

The session was opened by MIFTAH CEO Dr. Lily Feidy, who stressed on the importance of discussing the crisis in the political system and coming out with an integral political vision in light of the recent possibility of returning to Palestinian-Israeli negotiations. She continued that this process would directly impact the political system in its entirety.

The session was chaired by Dr. Hanan Ashrawi, head of MIFTAH’s Board of Directors. She pointed to the recent changes locally and regionally, namely in Egypt, and how this has impacted the issue of national reconciliation and the conflict over authorities between the PLO and the PA.

On their part, the participants discussed the crisis in the political system and the absence of legislative monitoring due to the continued political split. They also posed the question of the goals and justifications for returning to negotiations in spite of the fact that there is no change in Israeli policy on the ground. The participants pointed to the state of indifference between the PA and public opinion, saying that the people relinquished their right to accountability and pressure tactics. In return, the leadership disregarded the people’s opinions on several levels. The attendees also discussed the role of civil society in reviving public opinion and the role of youth in addition to calling for a national dialogue conference to discuss the political line, strategic mechanisms for change and the need for new blood.
