Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

Ramallah -- As part of efforts by the Palestinian women's movement to include the agenda of Palestinian women in building peace and security at the regional and international levels, MIFTAH, the Palestinian Working Women's Society and Women's Development and Media Society participated in strategic planning sessions recently held in Cairo, Egypt. The meeting was hosted by the Karama movement and UNDP with participation from Arab women from various Arab regions, and aimed at formulating a joint vision on the priorities of women's issues in the Arab region. Focus was placed on women living under systematic and increasing violence from political tensions in the region and from the instability resulting from conflicts and the Israeli occupation.

The women representatives from different countries in Arab region, including Palestinian representatives Amal Khreisheh from the Palestinian Working Women's Society, Victoria Shukri from the Women's Development and Media Society, and Lamis Shuaibi from MIFTAH, came out with a vision responsive to the concerns of Arab women, namely those under Israeli occupation and in regional conflicts.

The vision focused on the need to promote the role of political participation of women in the Arab world based on the principles of freedom, inclusive democracy, equality and respect for a system of human rights and social justice. This is aimed at ultimately realizing the aspired-for change in the coming decades of supporting the rise of a women's leadership role in the Arab and international arenas.

The strategic planning workshops determined the course of action throughout 2015-2017. During this period, Karama and UNDP will support legal and legislative changes including constitutional changes in the countries so they are more responsive to gender issues, those concerned with women's protection and promotion of women's political participation. They will also support pressure towards promoting women's efforts in building peace and security in the region.

The Palestinian participants submitted an official request to Karama and to UNDP on the need to support Palestinian women in their national demand to end the Israeli occupation of Palestinian land, through supporting Palestinian women's voices in calling for a halt to the repeated violations against these women as a result of this occupation, including at the international level through the various international arenas and UN forums.
