Your Key to Palestine
The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

Your Excellency, President Abbas,

As the first clergyman here to speak, may I say that we are honored to have this time with you. May I welcome you to the United States and pray that your visit will be positive and productive. From your words I believe that it already has been.

We want you to know that we share the aspirations and hopes of the Palestinian people who long for the day when they, and their Israeli neighbors, will enjoy peace and prosperity. The suffering of your people has found an echo in our hearts.

We have been encouraged by recent actions by both Palestinians and Israelis to reject violence and to seek a way forward together.

We support the creation of a viable Palestinian state, living in peace with a secure Israel. We are convinced that the fates of both peoples, Palestinians and Israelis, are linked. We know that the peace we seek can only be built on the foundations of justice and respect for the human rights of all. We are grateful for your courageous leadership in moving your people along the way to a more hopeful future. We know this is a difficult road to walk because there have been tragedies and disappointments along the way, and there are challenging pitfalls ahead. You know better than we do that walking the road to a just peace requires great patience and courage. It requires parallel and simultaneous steps by each side to address the concerns of the other side. It demands commitment and perseverance.

We want you to know that you do not walk this road alone. For many years we have worked to support a peace process that leads to security and justice for both Palestinians and Israelis. We assure you that we walk the road of peace with you. We will continue to call on our government to exercise balance and concerted leadership to pursue a peace process for all the peoples of the land we call holy. We have, and we will, support United States funding to build the capacity of Palestinians to establish the institutions you need for a viable state.

Mr. President, I want to assure you that we are united with you and with your people in seeking a just resolution to this longstanding conflict – a solution that envisions a viable Palestinian state living in peace with a secure Israel.

May Allah, the one God, the merciful and the compassionate, bless you and your great people. Shukran.
