Poll # 158: National Unity Government

A survey prepared by Dr. Nabil Kukali has revealed:

  • (91.0%) Oppose attacking the churches in the territories of the Palestinian territories.
  • (65.2%) Are in favor of the dissolution of the Executive Force in Gaza Strip.
  • (30.1%) Believe that Mr. Ismael Haniyyeh is the most credible personality to be charged with the formation of the national unity government.
  • (57.5%) Are to various degrees in favor of holding premature PLC-elections, whilst only (42.5%) are to various extents in favor of holding premature Palestinian Authority presidential elections.
  • (65.4%) Support the strike of the public sector employees and workers.
  • (35.3%) Are in favor of forming a national unity government on the basis of the national dialogue charter.
  • (61.8%) Oppose the dissolution of the Palestinian Authority.
  • (45.9%) Evaluated the performance of the PA-President with "very good" and "good", whilst (40.0%) did that for the performance of the Palestinian Prime Minister.
  • (33.5%) Believe that the US intervention is responsible for the present Palestinian crisis, whilst (27.7%) refer that to the sticking of Hamas to its positions.
  • (52.7%) Oppose the Palestinian government's refusal of the international Quartet conditions.

In the most recent poll prepared by Dr. Nabil Kukali, Director of the Palestinian Center for Public Opinion (PCPO), and conducted during the period from October 8th to 15th, 2006, a random sample of (1020) respondents, representing the various demographic specimen of the people living in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and Gaza Strip, who are above 18 years old, has been interviewed.

The most significant result of this poll, Dr. Kukali said, is that a high rate of the Palestinians, namely (52.7%), oppose the Palestinian government's refusal of the international Quartet conditions, specifically (52.5%) are from Gaza Strip and (52.8%) from the West Bank. In addition, Dr. Kukali has shown that (61.4%) are in favor of the meeting of the Palestinian President "Abu Mazin" with the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and pointed out that a considerable rate of the Palestinians are to various degrees in favor of holding premature national elections in the Palestinian territories, namely (57.5%), where (60.1%) are from the West Bank and (53.0%) are from Gaza Strip, whilst only (42.5%) to different extents are in favor of holding premature presidential elections.

Dr. Kukali concluded furthermore from the poll findings that the Palestinian President, Mr. Mahmoud Abbas, is still enjoying a positive evaluation of his performance by the Palestinian people. This rate has reached (45.9%), whilst those who evaluated the performance of the Palestinian Prime Minister in a positive way were (40.0%) of the Palestinians.
