MIFTAH recently capped off six days of training in the southern (Bethlehem, Hebron) and central (Jerusalem, Ramallah, Jericho) districts in cooperation with the Ministry of Local Government and the Central Elections Committee, as part of the EU partnership project with civil society institutions. A total of 56 elected female LGU members from various central and southern West Bank districts who were part of the most recent local elections in May, 2017 participated in the training workshops.

The agenda for the training workshops revolved around the use of guidebooks for issues pertaining to the work of LGUs. MIFTAH’s goal is to target female LGU members so that these guidelines could serve as easy and simple tools that provide them with information that would allow them to carry out their duties, in addition to encouraging their involvement in decision-making circles within LGUs.

The workshops also provided a detailed evidence-based explanation of subjects pertaining to developmental strategic planning, structural urban planning and infrastructure services planning.

MIFTAH project coordinator Hanan Said, said the training workshops were part of MIFTAH’s strategic goal of promoting good governance in Palestine and the participation of women and youth in designing policies and in making decisions in public decision-making circles. The focus, she added, is especially on the local government sector through supporting women and youth to take on positions of responsibility so they could become more involved in political and public life. For this to come to fruition, MIFTAH prepared and released a group of guidebooks so that elected members could carry out their roles with preparedness, be able to follow up on issues related to the needs of their communities and exert efforts to improve the circumstances of women in their areas in a more studied and organized manner.
