Israeli Soldiers Brutally Massacre Moslem Worshipers at Al-Aqsa Mosque

Jerusalem, Friday 29/9/2000-Israeli soldiers have brutally massacred scores of Palestinian worshipers at Al-Aqsa Mosue in Jerusalem. The number of martyrs so far has reached 5, with more than 235 (still mounting) injuries, some of which are critical.

This is yet another massacre by Israel. The implications of this behavior constitute a real threat to the prospects of peace.

The attack comes a day after the provocative intrusion of Likud leader Ariel Sharon to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound. Sharon, whose military history is tainted with brutality, massacres, and inhumanity against the Palestinian people (Sabra and Shatila Camps), has ignited a volatile situation, particularly in Jerusalem, and in light of the current final status negotiations.

This development raises concern and uncertainty regarding Israel's role as a "partner for Peace." Israel's policy towards the Palestinians clearly remains that of an "occupier." Today's incidents are a direct blow to the peace process, and a detrimental element to the region's quest for peace and stability.

The Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy (MIFTAH) strongly condemns the attack, and urges the international community to take a just stance against Israel's brutality, and condemn the provocative actions of Ariel Sharon.

We also reiterate that Jerusalem is "occupied' Palestinian territory. Israel's unilateral exercise of sovereignty over the city is a continued violation of Palestinian rights under international law, in particular UN Resolutions and the Fourth Geneva Convention.
