WOMEN MARCH FOR THEIR LAND IN BIDDU

Nonviolent women demonstration against the construction of the wall

[Biddu, NW Jerusalem] Women from the villages located northwest Jerusalem will meet on Sunday, April 25, 2004 in front of Biddu Municipality Council at 10am. They will march against the destruction of their land, the ghettoization of their community and the persisting escalation of violence from the Israeli army against nonviolent demonstrators.

For the past two months NW Jerusalem residents of Biddu, Beit Surik, Qattana, and other villages have been resisting the destruction of their land and the Israeli government’s plan to build a wall around their villages, cutting them off from their farmland, and creating an impoverished ghetto out of their community. Dozens of Palestinians, internationals and Israeli peace activists have been injured and arrested in demonstrations that have been violently attacked by the Israeli military. On February 26, Israeli soldiers’ attack on demonstrators in the village of Biddu, led to the shooting death of 3 unarmed Palestinian young men. The army has used live ammunition against nonviolent demonstrators on several occasion since then, shooting dead a fifth young demonstrator on Sunday April 18 and wounding critically another one on Wednesday April 21.

Women from the northwest region of Jerusalem remain determined in their struggle for their land and in their protest against the systematic use of lethal force against nonviolent anti-wall demonstrations.
