Statement on the passing of Arafat

THE PASSING OF YASSER ARAFAT

The Norwegian Association of NGO's for Palestine mournes the death of President Yasser Arafat and brought our condolences to the Palestinian people to the Head of the Palestinian General Delegation to Norway, Omar Kitmitto. Friday Nov 12 we arranged a torchlight procession in Oslo to honour the memory of Arafat. Finn Erik-Thoresen, the deputy leader of the national Labour Union (LO), Gry Larsen, leader of the Labour Youth League and Fuad Timraz from the Palestinian Community held speaches. Over 200 people attended. The event was noted in several national newspapers and the on the national television news.

There were also events on Arafats death in the cities of Kristiansand, Stavanger and Bergen. A small delegation from the Palestine Comittee, one of our member organizations, went to the funural in Ramallah.

Several board members and others from our organization made statements in national and regional media, giving our condolences to the Palestinian people and critizising the government for not aiding the Palestinians in their effort to bury Arafat in their capital Jerusalem.

On the 29th of November the Norwegian Association of NGO's for Palestine will host a meeting on Yasser Arafat inviting people who knew him to speek about their personal experiences.

PROTEST AGIANST THE WALL

The Norwegian Tear-Down the Wall Campaign held a protest in Oslo on Friday Nov 12 and made a clear statement in the national media. A symbolic wall were build in the main street of Oslo and Atle Sommerfelt, General Secretary of the Church Aid and Kristin Halvorsen, leader of the Socialist Left Party made speaches. Musician Lars Klevstrand gave new life to an old song from Nicaragua "Riv ned gjerdene" (Tear down the fences).
