  • 47.2% believe that their financial standing during the year 2004 is worse than the year before.


  • 37.9% expect an improvement in their financial standing during the next year 2005.


  • 68.2% are worried about the subsistence of their families.


  • 60.4%evaluated the general economic situation in the Palestinian territories as bad.


  • 37.8%Believe that their major concern at present is safety.

In the latest economical survey prepared by Dr. Nabil Kukali and conducted by the Palestinian Center for Public Opinion (PCPO) in the period December (20 – 24) 2004 during different working hours, a random sample at the size of (1100) Palestinian adults from the West Bank, incl.East Jerusalem, and Gaza Strip was chosen.

All interviews in that survey were carried out face to face inside the respondents’ homes, the choice of which is randomly performed according to PCPO’s long experienced scientific methodology.

The sampling error throughout the survey is found at (±2.95%).

The percentage of female respondents was (47.9%) whilst that of the male ones was (52.1%).

The distribution of the random sample among the residential areas of the respondents was (65.4%) in the West Bank, incl. East Jerusalem, and (34.6%) in Gaza Strip.

Dr. Kukali said that the average size of the respondent families was (7.5) individuals, and the number of schooling years for the respondents was (11.8) years.

Dr. Nabil Kukali, Director of the PCPO, said:”The most significant results of this survey”>

Is that the majority of the Palestinian people evaluated their financial standing during the year 2004 as bad”.

“there is a certain optimism in the improvement of the people’s economical situation during the next year 2005 since the majority of the Palestinians expect that the elected PA president would give the economic situation of the people a special dedication after so many announcements and promises made on this issue by the presidential candidates>

“55.5% of the respondents believe that Al-Aqsa Intifada was at various degrees a disadvantage to their economical interests”.

Dr. Kukali concluded his interpretations saying “the Palestinians are generally satisfied with the services rendered by the banks operating in the territories of the Palestinian Authority”.
