The Palestinian Initiatives for The Promotoion of Global Dialogue and Democracy

The Media Monitoring Unit of the Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy (MIFTAH) has called upon Palestinian journalists and media professionals to take heed of the use of rational, realistic and professional language in the media discourse, and avoid language that may connote incitement or praise for killing civilians.

The recommendation was issued through the Unit’s second special issue (report) concerning the coverage of The Palestinian Media of the Eilat Suicide Operation that took place on the morning of Monday January 29, 2007. MIFTAH has also recommended that the Palestinian media should follow up on such operations through analyses, opinions and investigation, not only to highlight them but also to subject them to scrutiny and criticism.

MIFTAH urges the Palestinian media to exert more effort to providing an independent, objective and comprehensive media discourse-particularly in television-ensuring satisfactory coverage and appropriate sequencing and follow up on issues, disseminating more accurate and comprehensive information, raising consciousness towards the opinions of others and helping to raise objective discussions on means of managing the struggle with Israel in a manner that serves the Palestinian public, rather than factional interests.

The Palestinian Initiative for the Promotion of Global Dialogue and Democracy, MIFTAH, is a non-governmental, non-partisan Jerusalem-based institution dedicated to fostering democracy and good governance within Palestinian society through promoting public accountability, transparency, the free flow of information and ideas and the challenging of stereotyping at home and abroad.
